Gillian Crist attends Lubbock High School in Lubbock, Texas. Crist works with student journalists in West Texas to enhance regional connections for New Voices.
“I believe it’s important for students to learn about the freedom of speech and its perks/consequences. Our voices are just as valid as anybody else. To me, New Voices brings hope to students like me who have been censored and have faced issues with their administration. It shows solidarity for many passionate student journalists.”
What I Do
As the West Texas Regional Organizer, I work to spread awareness about New Voices Texas and reach out to different student publication organizations to encourage them to get involved in
NVT.
I am responsible for West Texas outreach and the formation of NVT clubs. I measure my success as an officer by how much awareness I am able to spread and how many new students are able to realize that their voices can be heard.
By the end of the year, I hope to have a substantial number of NVT clubs in West Texas, as well as sharing my and many other student journalists’ stories. I strive to give student journalists the resources and inspiration they need to fight for their rights. I plan on reaching out to as many
student publications as I can, and informing them on why it’s important to have these rights.
