Alexandra Segura is Editor-In-Chief of the Convocation Yearbook at V.R. Eaton High School in Haslet, Texas. As the West Texas Regional Organizing Officer for New Voices Texas, Segura is committed to expanding student involvement in the New Voices movement by recruiting schools, building connections among student journalists, and advocating for stronger student press protections throughout Texas.

A New Voices law would give student reporters the opportunity to practice responsible journalism while preparing for careers in the media and civic engagement. Every student voice has value, and protecting student press rights ensures that those voices can inform, inspire, and create positive changes.”



What I Do

As the West Texas Regional Organizing Officer of New Voices Texas, I work to expand the New Voices movement by recruiting student journalists, publications, and advisers across West Texas while strengthening connections between every region of our organization. My goal is to ensure that student journalists know their rights, have opportunities to become involved, and feel supported by a statewide network of advocates.

I am responsible for reaching out to high schools throughout West Texas, encouraging student publications to join New Voices Texas, and helping students establish New Voices clubs on their campuses. I also collaborate with fellow regional organizers to connect our regions, share resources, coordinate outreach efforts, and build a stronger statewide community that advocates for student press freedom.

I will measure success as an officer by the number of schools, student journalists, and advisers who become actively involved with New Voices Texas, the growth of New Voices clubs throughout West Texas, and the lasting relationship we build between regions. Success also means increasing awareness of students to advocate for themselves and their publications.

By the end of the school year, I hope to have recruited new schools into the organization, helped establish additional New Voices clubs across West Texas, strengthened collaboration among all regions of New Voices Texas, and inspired more student journalists to advocate for the passage of a New Voices law that protects student press freedom throughout the state.
