Audrey Li is the Editor-in-Chief of the Torch Newspaper at Seven Lakes High School in Katy, Texas. 

I believe it’s important to advocate for student press freedoms because suppressing young voices means suppressing the future. Without broadcasting these diverse perspectives, people won’t understand the perspectives and challenges that youth face today, missing out on an entire facet of our future society. Students ought to have their voices ring free in order to foster a more inclusive society.



What I Do

As the East Texas Regional Organizer Officer of New Voices Texas, I work to collaborate with local East-Texas organizations and coalitions to expand support and visibility of the New Voices Movement. 

I am responsible for proactively contacting local organizations and high school journalists to spread the word about the importance of student press rights. Not only that, I want to empower student-journalists to understand that their voice is power; only when we come together can we truly make a change in society. 

I will measure success as an officer through how many new partnerships and connections that I made in the journalism community. I plan to prioritize both quantity and quality, making sure that I reach out to as many people as I can while also getting my message across as clearly as possible. 

By the end of the school year, I want to accomplish going to the Texas State Capitol and successfully help pass the New Voices Law for Texas.
