“It is imperative to pass a New Voices law in Texas, because not only are we falling behind on passing legislation to protect students’ voices in their publications, but we are also hindering the full potential of our future adults in expressing themselves freely. Let our voices be heard and echo throughout to serve as a proud example of securing what we all deserve.”
What I Do
As the East Texas Regional Organizer of New Voices Texas, I work to connect the schools in my region and, more importantly, the students, passionate about the overarching goal of protecting student journalists. I am responsible for keeping student publications in the loop regarding our progress on the legislation, important news or updates, and anything else that helps raise awareness of student publication censorship. This leads to increased engagement with this current issue, which in turn allows for rising groups of journalists with similar interests, and builds towards the basis and purpose of NVT: protection of student journalist voices.
I will measure success as an officer by diligently sending out messages to those in my region and reflecting on how effective the ways of communication have been. Seeing an overall increase in students, teachers, and communities being aware of student publication rights would definitely be a success.
By the end of the school year, I wish to have launched a widespread knowledge of New Voices Texas and our goals within the East Texas region through social media platforms, emails, and more. Furthermore, I hope to have found success in the upcoming legislative session, which is not only a personal wish, but also an ultimate goal for us all. out by the world.
