“I believe it is crucial to pass the New Voices law in Texas to safeguard the freedom of student journalists and protect their right to report on issues without censorship. Such legislation would allow young voices, foster a culture of journalism, and uphold the principles of free speech and also freedom essential for a vibrant democracy to be proud of.”
What I Do
As the Legislative Specialist Officer of New Voices Texas, my main goal is to help protect student press rights by pushing for real change at the policy level. I work with students, teachers, and lawmakers to support bills that defend our right to report freely and without censorship.
Throughout the year, I stay on top of any legislation that could impact student journalism. I help break it down so people can understand what’s at stake, and I encourage students to speak up, testify, or even just learn how they can make a difference. I also work with our other officers to make sure our efforts are united and strong. Whether that’s organizing outreach, building support for a bill, or talking directly with decision-makers, I’m here to help turn student voices into action.
For me, success means seeing more students informed, involved and watch our efforts lead to lasting change across Texas.
