Juliana Werlinich is the News editor for the Hawk Eye at Hebron High School in Carrollton, Texas. Werlinich works as the legislative specialist with a focus on lawmaker outreach to encourage the passing of a New Voices bill.

“Students are entitled to the rights of the constitution as much as any other person living in the United States. Censorship in student-led media is just as much a violation of free speech as censoring anybody else. It’s important to me as a writer that everybody be treated fairly in the eyes of the law.”



What I Do

I hope to, through open and honest conversations with lawmakers, encourage both sides of the political spectrum to support and sign the New Voices bill at the upcoming legislative session. I will facilitate communication with representatives throughout the state and work in coordination with the Legislative Officer to spread awareness and support for the New Voices legislation. I will communicate and contact lawmakers throughout the state, meet with them, and educate them about the need for the bill to be passed. I expect to make the NVT bill more known and supported by the time the year is up. As a prospecting lawyer, I hope the experience fighting for the right to free speech allows me to get familiar with the legal system and teach me valuable communication, debate, and persuasion skills.
