Katie Mathews is the Managing Editor of the Replay Yearbook and a staff writer for the Raider Rumbler Newspaper of Rouse High School in Leander, Texas. Mathews works with officers and specialists to gain exposure for New Voices Texas.
“As student journalists, it is essential to fight for our first amendment right to use our voices to share truth within our communities. We have a responsibility to share truth and with censorship, it is impossible to do so, which is why I will continue to fight for our rights and push for protections that ensure student journalists can speak, write and report freely.”
What I Do
As a communications specialist, I will work with officers and other specialists to increase awareness for New Voices and advocate for stronger student press rights. By developing and executing social media campaigns and event strategies, I hope to educate audiences on the value of the New Voices Texas legislation and the importance of student journalism.
By the end of the school year, I hope to grow our social media platforms and bring attention to New Voices Texas as well as creating an environment for student journalists to feel safe sharing their censorship experiences to help put a stop to this issue.
