What I Do
Serving as a legislative specialist, I work to employ my knowledge of state government to promote the passage of new legislation in support of Student Press Freedom in Texas. I work in collaboration with the Legislative Officer to seek out bill sponsors who may be interested in promoting journalistic freedom in the Texas Senate and House of Representatives, with an emphasis on those serving in the education committee in order to promote this bill to its full potential. I measure success in this role by passing New Voices Legislation this upcoming legislative session, as well as serving when needed for the Legislative Officer.
As the West Texas Regional Organizer, my role is to serve schools in West Texas, working to inform them on their rights as student journalists whilst empowering them to use their press rights to their full potential. I work to raise awareness on New Voices Texas, including the progress of the Legislation in regards to its passage, and form a larger base of support for the organization and its interests in order to promote the bill, and its intentions so that student journalist voices may be ultimately protected.
Success in this role may be seen by increasing community awareness and support of New Voices Legislation throughout West Texas, growing the statewide effort to put an end to unjust student publication censorship and ultimately the passage of the bill.
