Scott Seamon is the Managing Editor of the Horizon at Westwood High School in Round Rock, Texas. Seamon works with his fellow regional organizers to reach out to advisors and students in their respective regions.
“I believe it’s important to advocate for Student Press organizations having freedoms equal to their peers at the professional level. This is because both student journalists and professional journalists have the same goal: informing the public, which would be extremely unfair if the students, most of whom strive to get to the level of the professionals, aren’t afforded the same rights as those who’ve already been in the field for multiple years.”
What I Do
As the Regional Organizer of New Voices Texas for Central, South, and East Texas, I am responsible for organizing New Voices outreach to student journalists and advisers in those areas. I also help to create local coalitions in those communities.
I will measure my success as an officer this year by gauging how much interest and support I bring to the New Voices movement within my region, in addition to recruitment efforts.
By the end of the school year I hope that I have significantly boosted New Voices’ position in my three regions so that we may begin the following school year (2023-24) with a step ahead, looking towards the legislative session.
