Zara Bukhari is the News Editor for her school’s publication, the Three Penny Press, at Bellaire High School in Bellaire, Texas.

“I fight for student press rights because stories shape change. Without students’ voices, the truth goes untold. Every student deserves the right to report freely without the fear of censorship.”

What I Do

As the Legislative Officer of New Voices Texas, my priority is to focus on building and strengthening relationships with legislators and policymakers during this non-legislative year. While no legislation will be introduced this year, I will work towards ensuring success next year. I plan on connecting with returning legislators, identifying potential allies in the Texas House and Senate, and maintaining regular communication with them daily.

I will measure success as an officer by working towards expanding our outreach beyond legislators, but to advocacy organizations as well, to help build allies statewide. By the end of the school year, I hope that New Voices Texas will be in a stronger position with legislative and advocacy allies so that next year, our team will have a better chance at success.
